Prince’s Trust, Truth About Youth

Empowering Young Creatives Through Community Storytelling

I led the technical video production for an innovative Prince’s Trust initiative—the “Truth about Youth” project, generously supported by the Co-op Foundation. This groundbreaking program brought together aspiring filmmakers and media professionals aged 18-25, providing hands-on experience across all aspects of television, film, and video production.

Community-Centered Learning

True to the Prince’s Trust ethos of community engagement, each intensive three-week cohort partnered with established Bristol organizations including the RNIB, Age UK, Watershed Media Centre, M Shed, and the Arnolfini. These collaborations created authentic storytelling opportunities while addressing real community needs, giving participants meaningful subject matter that extended far beyond theoretical exercises.

Student-Led Creative Process

Rather than following predetermined scripts, the program embraced a participant-driven approach. Young filmmakers took creative ownership, identifying stories, securing locations, and coordinating with community partners—often arranging shoots with just 24 hours’ notice. This methodology fostered genuine entrepreneurial skills while maintaining the spontaneity essential to documentary filmmaking.

Intensive Post-Production Workflow

The compressed timeline demanded rigorous daily workflows. Each evening, I processed the day’s footage, logging and beginning preliminary edits to ensure we met our non-negotiable deadline: a polished film showcase on the final afternoon. As projects progressed, participants gradually assumed greater editorial responsibility, with students contributing to post-production decisions and organizing their own screening events.

Creative Collaboration Under Pressure

These intensive residencies created an environment where every participant contributed creatively under real industry pressures. The combination of meaningful community partnerships, student autonomy, and professional production standards resulted in both exceptional learning outcomes and impactful films that served their partner organizations.
